Blek Le Rat: Artist Profile

Blek le Rat was born Xavier Prou in Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris in 1952. He is considered the godfather of stencil graffiti art. He studied painting and architecture. He began his artwork in Paris in 1981. Since then he has had a great influence on today's graffiti and "guerilla art" movements, his main motivation being social consciousness and the desire to bring art to the people. British graffiti artist Banksy has acknowledged Blek's influence saying "every time I think I've painted something slightly original, I find out that Blek Le Rat has done it as well, only twenty years earlier."

In October 2006, Blek le Rat had his first solo U.K. exhibition in London at the Leonard Street Gallery. Blek also had an exhibition in December 2009 at the Metro Gallery in Melbourne, a centre of street art in Australia. The exhibition entitled; "Le Ciel Est Bleu, La Vie Est Belle" (The sky is blue, life is beautiful), features wooden panels, canvas, screen-print and photographs. It traces the artist's oeuvre from the early 1980s to the present. (wiki stolen...)

Fall 2010 Trend: Boots

With cold weather comes boots. Here are a few good ways to keep your feet dry and warm this fall...

We'll start with my favorite, riding boots! I like these because they are as comfortable as flats and they repel water. These are actual riding boots so they are made for action and will be long lasting. They are kinda like your typical rain boots but more flattering because they are narrow which elongates the leg rather than widens them.

Next up are peep toe ankle boots. My favorites are the top ones. You can get these in many styles from plain black to oxford styles which are popular for the menswear trend this season. I think these look best with a mix of masculine and feminine style such as tights and a skirt or dress. Or you could wear them out for a night on the town with skinny jeans and a blazer or a poncho for a more casual look.

I know it’s kind of hard to see, but I thought this picture was cool anyway. This girl is wearing the combat boot style. These fine boots were made by Steve Madden and run about $100.00. I like this trend and it’s big for fall but can be hard to wear. I like them with skinny jeans, and a scarf as shown in this picture but I’ve also seen them worn well under a girly dress with tights. Again it has to do with the balance of masculine and feminine.

Fall 2010 Trend: Camel Poncho

This is the new H&M Camel Poncho that everyone is going crazy for this fall! They come in every price range from the $1,500 Chloe version to the roughly $60 version you see above. And to tell you the truth, I’m sure Forever 21 will have an even cheaper version for all the broke college students like me. I would rock this look with black tights and boots or with herringbone tights and cute ankle boots or even clogs as seen on the Chanel 2010 runway. Since camel is considered a neutral color it can be worn with anything, but I’m big on the neutrals with black trend that has been cropping up all over NYFW.

Audrey Kawasaki Artist Profile

Audrey Kawasaki (born March 31, 1982) is a Los Angeles based painter, known for her distinctive, erotically charged portrayals of young, adolescent women. Her works are oil paintings painted directly on to wood panels, and her style has been described as a fusion of Art Nouveau and Japanese manga.

Kawasaki studied fine art painting for two years at the Pratt Institute in New York City, but left after two years without completing her degree. She cites the emphasis in the New York art scene on conceptual art, an approach at odds with her figurative, illustrative style, among the reasons that she left. - (Thank you Wikipedia)

Audrey Kawasaki has been one of my favorite artists for a long time, I hope to rock some of her amazing art as a tat someday. Her art and style are very unique. I love the soft images that fade at the edges as well as the intricate detail in her lace like backgrounds. I really enjoy how she combines contrasting elements of soft feminine style as well as harder elements such as death. Her art is dreamy and ethereal. Plus hey, its sexual and I like that...
